Emperor Pair
Product Details
Few birds carry the presence of the Emperor Goose. With its stark white head and neck, slate-gray body, and quiet confidence on the shoreline, the Emperor has long stood apart from other geese. Early explorers likened its appearance to the ermine trim of an imperial cloak, while the Yupik name translates to “the one having a parka hood.” A fitting title for a bird forged by the Bering Sea.
Emperor Geese live at the edge of the map, surviving where land and ocean collide. Raised among jagged coastlines and brutal winters, they depend almost entirely on marine vegetation and invertebrates, a lifestyle that makes them both resilient and incredibly difficult to study. Slow to mature and vulnerable to population swings, the species has seen renewed concern in recent years, leading to the closure of all legal harvest nationwide.
This DSD Limited Series Emperor Goose is inspired by the decoys used recently by Alaska Department of Fish and Game during winter banding efforts in Alaska. Wanting to increase capture success, biologists turned to custom hand-painted DSD Emperor decoys to help draw in and relax wary birds long enough for safe rocket-net captures. The result was the highest capture rates since the inception of the program, helping ensure critical research could continue.
Sculpted and hand painted to our highest standards, this decoy celebrates one of North America’s most unique waterfowl species. Built on a durable DSD body, it is equally at home on a collector’s shelf or deployed in the harsh coastal environments it was designed for.
Each Emperor Goose Limited Series decoy includes an aluminum band, plastic tarsal band and Certificate of Authenticity, marking its place in the DSD Limited lineup. More than a decoy, this piece represents the intersection of craftsmanship, science, and conservation, and a small way to honor the biologists working to protect Alaska’s Goose for generations to come.
Made in the U.S.A.

The Emperor Goose is one of North America’s most unique and vulnerable waterfowl species, shaped by the harsh coastal environments of the Bering Sea. Slow to mature and dependent almost entirely on marine vegetation, Emperor Geese are difficult to study and susceptible to population declines. In recent years, concerning population trends led to the closure of all legal harvest, underscoring the importance of continued research to better understand their survival, movements, and long-term outlook.
During winter banding efforts on Kodiak Island, Alaska Department of Fish and Game biologists faced challenges safely capturing Emperor Geese in their expansive coastal habitat. Custom hand-painted DSD Emperor Goose decoys were deployed to help relax wary birds long enough for rocket-net captures. The result was the highest capture rates since the inception of the program, helping ensure critical research could continue. This Limited Series was inspired by that work and exists to help support ongoing conservation efforts by gifting through Ducks Unlimited to the Alaska Born to Fly Initiative.
