The Red Phase Leading Hen pays tribute to the rare erythristic wild turkey. A genetic variation that produces warm red, chestnut, and rusty tones throughout their plumage. Unlike “smoke phase” birds that lack pigment, these birds carry an over-expression of red. Documented cases are extremely limited and most hunters will never encounter one in the wild.
We chose the Leading Hen for a reason. She’s the bird other hens follow and the one longbeards focus on. Adorned in this aberrant color phase, she is a total attention grabber, whether she’s in the turkey woods or in your collection.
Each Red Phase Leading Hen is Hand-painted and molded from our durable ACE Material. She comes complete with a brass pendant molded into her tail and a Certificate of Authenticity.

This Limited Series isn’t just about what you see — it’s about what we’re helping uncover.
Dave Smith Decoys is proud to invest in groundbreaking science on wild turkey genetics. Through a gift to Ducks Unlimited, we will be supporting wildturkeyDNA, a collaborative research project involving Ducks Unlimited, the University of Texas at El Paso, National Wild Turkey Federation, the Wild Turkey Lab, and the Low Country Game Bird Foundation that will use hunter-harvested DNA samples to study the genetics of wild turkeys. This first year of their work focuses on hybridization and rare color variations, including the smoke phase.
To support the efforts, we’re donating 20% of the proceeds from this drop to uncovering the secretes of wild turkey genetics and holding a special auction for one Smoke Phase Jake, with 100% of the winning bid going to the cause.
It’s a one-of-a-kind decoy, tied to a one-of-a-kind project. Because preserving the future of wild turkeys means understanding their past — and we’re honored to help tell that story.
